Description: The Managerial Criminalist, M-IV, designated Director, Police Crime Laboratory will be responsible for directing a professional scientific and support staff engaged in highly complex forensic examinations and analyses of physical evidence, administrative tasks related to criminal investigations, and providing expert testimony with respect to physical evidence in legal proceedings. Formulates policies and procedures governing operation of the lab; ensuring that all work performed is in accordance with Department procedures, federal and state regulations, and accreditation standards of the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors/Lab Accreditation Board (ASCLD/LAB) and the New York State Commission of Forensic Science (NYSCOFS). Oversees, monitors, and documents ASCLD/LAB accreditation standards for yearly inspections and full re-accreditation every five (5) years; establishes quality assurance controls and security measures for all evidence entering and leaving the lab; maintains all health and safety regulations in accordance with ASCLD/LAB and NYSCOFS accreditation standards and all OSHA and PESH regulations; and administers the lab budget of $23 million.

Requirements: A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college with specialization in criminalistics, forensic science, chemistry, biology, physics, biochemistry, molecular biology, or a closely related scientific or engineering field, and five (5) years of full-time professional experience working in the area of criminalistics, forensic science, or analytical chemistry, eighteen (18) months of which must have been in a managerial, supervisory, or administrative capacity performing significant managerial or supervisory duties in a forensic laboratory with a substantial case load and a staff of proficiency tested examiners/analysts. Assistant Professor – Forensic Science

Saint Augustine’s College invites applications for an assistant professor to teach courses in the undergraduate forensic science degree program. This is a nine month, tenure-track position, starting August, 2010. The successful candidate will teach a variety of courses in the forensic science program - including some subset of courses among the following: Introduction to Forensic Science, Forensic Serology, Internship, Forensic DNA Profiling, Forensic Evidence and Lab, and Forensic Microscopy. Qualified applicants must have a M.S. or Ph.D. in forensic science or a Ph.D. in the natural sciences suitable to teach in the field of forensic science. The successful applicant will have a strong foundation in working in a forensic science laboratory environment. Applicants must be willing to teach courses and lab instruction in addition to serving as advisor and mentor for undergraduate forensic science majors, and to contribute to the enhancement of the program by establishing outside links with the local forensic science community. Monroe County Public Safety Laboratory
Forensic Chemist II/III- Controlled Substances/Fire Debris

The Monroe County Public Safety Laboratory is seeking applicants for a position to be filled by a Forensic Chemist II/III in the Controlled Substances/Fire Debris Section of its ASCLD-LAB accredited laboratory.

Qualifications: To meet the minimum qualifications for this recruitment, you must have: A Bachelor’s degree from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university in a natural science, a forensic science, an engineering science, toxicology, or criminalistics, including or supplemented by at least twelve (12) semester credit hours or its equivalent in chemistry, plus one (1) year of full-time or its part-time equivalent experience in a forensic laboratory conducting chemical analysis; positions in Public Safety Laboratory require a state and national criminal history background investigation, which includes a fingerprint check and passing a pre-employment drug test.

Duties: includes the analysis of drug evidence such as marijuana, heroin, cocaine, prescription drugs and the analysis of fire debris. The Forensic Chemist II position differs from Forensic Chemist III position in that it handles more complex examinations and cases, and has increased independence. Having documented competency in fire debris is highly desirable.

The Nassau County Medical Examiner’s Office Department of Forensic Genetics is seeking to fill a two year Recovery Act Edward Byrne Memorial Grant funded Forensic Geneticist II supervisory position. A Master's degree in Genetics, Biology, Chemistry, or Forensic Science, including coursework in biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, statistics, and population genetics is required. Candidates must also possess a minimum of three years of satisfactory experience performing forensic DNA analysis in connection with criminal investigations or databanking for criminal offenders using Short Tandem Repeat (STR) analytical techniques. Education/Experience

Consultant Services – Forensic Firearms/Technical Leader

The NYPD is soliciting proposals for Forensic Firearms/ Technical Leader services for its Police Laboratory Firearms Analysis Section. Services would include: (1) technical guidance to analysts doing casework in firearms operability and microscopic comparisons of ballistic evidence; (2) collaboration with the Laboratory Training Coordinator regarding remedial training programs in aforementioned technical areas; (3) case analysis, processing and microscopy examination when needed; and (4) Criminal and Civil Court testimony. Both individuals and other entities (e.g., corporations, partnerships, etc.) may propose. A 3-year contract is anticipated, and 1000 total Consultant hours are estimated per contract year, but could vary according to need.

The Firearms and Tool Marks Examiner will conduct forensic examinations of firearms and tool marks on crime related evidence, identify the microscopic markings left on evidence in criminal investigations and how they relate to firearms or tools that made these markings, conducts complete scientific test if firearms evidence using laboratory equipment, prepares documentation and reports on the results of the collection and analysis of evidence.

Must be a highly qualified Firearms and Tool Marks Examiner with at least five (5) years experience. Must have been the lead of a team of firearms and tool mark analysts at least one (1) year. Must be able to work well in a team environment. Must be AFTE certified and possess organizational skills. Possess the ability to teach classes and brief information pertaining to processing of Firearms and ammunition components. Have experience processing evidence with chemicals in a laboratory setting. Be physically able and willing to rotationally deploy to either Iraq or Afghanistan a minimum of six months a year. Be able to obtain a US Military secret clearance and US Passport.
